Green
House Network global warming education programs multiply
grassroots leadership supporting the clean energy revolution
that we need to stop global warming.
Our model
for social change is the
Highlander Education and Research Center in Tennessee.
During the late 1950s, virtually every major civil rights
activist, from Rosa Parks to Dr. Martin Luther King,
attended Highlander workshops. As the Highlander Center did
during the labor and civil rights movements, we bring
together citizen activists and educators, provide
information, networking, tools, and organizing models. These
leaders return home to engage in action and education
helping to stop global warming now.
THE NEED TO ACT IS
URGENT:
Global warming demands action now.
Scientists are forecasting a warming of between 2 and 11
degrees F over the next century. During the last Ice Age the
world averaged only 9 degrees cooler than it is today. We
thus face the very real possibility of a swing in global
temperatures of Ice-Age magnitude within the lifetimes of
our children. It is no exaggeration to say that, unchecked,
global warming will cause more human suffering and destroy
more natural ecosystems than has any other industrial
pollutant in our history.
Climate
stabilization will require an extremely rapid transition
toward a clean energy future-one based on solar, wind and
biomass-generated power, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It
will take a powerful social movement to overcome political
and corporate inertia and catalyze the clean energy
revolution we need in order to avoid unimaginable change to
human and natural systems. We need committed, skilled,
persuasive climate communicators and advocates to make that
movement a reality.

IREA contributed $100,000 to Patrick
J. Michaels, a professor of environmental sciences at the
University of Virginia. Michaels is one of about a
dozen academics who for years have cast doubt on the science
surrounding global warming while downplaying the
scientifically accepted idea that humans are causing it.

National Volunteer Speakers Network
to Stop Global Warming
Our National Volunteer Speakers
Network includes over 250 citizens in more than 33 states
available to speak at no charge about global warming pollution,
climate change policy and the path to a clean energy future.
Over the last three years, our
speakers have given nearly 1000 global warming talks on college
campuses, talk radio, at businesses, community centers,
congregations and retirement communities, reaching more than
20,000 people.
Members of the National Volunteer
Speakers Network range from engineers to songwriters, from
college professors to business people. They are united by a
belief that global warming pollution presents a very real and
present danger to the health of the planet's human populations
and natural ecosystems, and that the United States needs to take
immediate steps to reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses.
A few of our speakers are climate
experts; the remainder are educated citizens. All are committed
to promoting open discussion and debate about global warming
pollution policy in our country.
